International Women’s Club of Moldova donation
Today the President of the Steaua Calauza Association, Viorica Capsa and Volunteer Projects Manager, Natalia Modval visited the renovated spaces that will become the Center for children and youth NICUSOR. Comparing what you see in the pictures to the initial state of this building it looks like a miracle. This miracle happened due to many donations from generous people and volunteers and partners.
We still have the most important part of the work to be done, the connections for the center to centralized water source and to sewage system. This is the most complicated and very costly work as it requires lots of permits and technical data authorizations. With the financial help of the International Women’s Club of Moldova http://iwcm.md/ we will be able to do this needed connections. With the help from the International Women’s Club our facilities will become safe and in accordance with all standards and sanitation norms.

Astăzi, președintele Asociației Steaua Calauza, Viorica Capsa si Voluntarul Manager Proiecte, Natalia Modval au vizitat încăperile renovate, care vor deveni Centru pentru copii și tineret NICUSOR. Comparând ceea ce vezi în imagini cu starea inițială a acestei clădiri pare ca un miracol s-a întâmplat. Acest miracol sa întâmplat cu ajutorul multor donații din partea oamenilor generoși și voluntari /parteneri.
Încă mai avem executat cea mai importantă parte a lucrărilor care urmează să fie făcut, conexiunile Centrului la sursa de apă centralizată și la sistemul de canalizare. Aceasta este lucrarea cea mai complicată și foarte costisitoare, deoarece necesită o mulțime de permise și autorizații, precum si date tehnice. Cu ajutorul financiar al Clubului Internațional al Femeilor din Moldova http://iwcm.md/, vom reusi să conectam clădirea la apa si canalizare. Cu ajutorul Clubului Internațional al Femeilor din Moldova Centrul nostru de reabilitare va deveni functional si adecvat tuturor cerințelor tehnice si sanitare.

Steaua Calauza NGO enjoyed a pleasant visit today, from people with a big heart and many gifts for our children with disabilities. Cernea family came with gifts for the disabled children at a perfect time for the Association. At the moment we are finishig the renovation of the NICUSOR Center, and our children will be able to develop their abilities while playing with the toys. We plan the opening of the NICUSOR Center in March, 2015. We kindly invite Valeriu Cernea and his family to the ceremony.
Asociatia Steaua Calauza a beneficiat azi de o vizita placuta, oameni cu inima mare si cu daruri multe pentru copiii cu dizabilitati. Familia Cernea a venit cu cadouri pentru copii in un moment oportun pentru Asociatie. La moment finisam reparatia centrului de reabilitare, unde copiii cu probleme locomotorii si alte nevoi speciale vor benefica de jucarii si jocuri pentru dezvoltarea abilitatilor. Planificam deschidea Centrului NICUSOR in luna martie, 2015. Invitam cu drag pe Valeriu cu familia la deschidere.
Donation from our friend Ursina Naef
Today, Viorica Capsa, Steaua Caluza President and Natalia Modval, Steaua Calauza Volunteer had the pleasure to try the new chars funded/donated by Ursina Naef, our long term dearest friend. Also, with the generous financial donation from Ursina and her family, Steaua Calauza ordered and received the equipment that will be installed in the newly renovated center.

Renovation of the Rehab center progress
The renovation project with the Steaua Calauza NGO is becoming a success. We have many donors and great people/volunteers partnering with us to reach the final goal: Opening of the Center for disabled children and youth “NICUSOR” in Gratietsti, Moldova. Renovation work at the future Center continues. You can see in the pictures the progress. New Windows installed, new floor and tile in the therapy room and hallway, walls in the hallway. There is still a lot of work but we have a great local company Prestigiu-Az that joined us in this endeavor, and with their engineering team we will provide a beautiful and adequate facility for disabled children in Gratiesti.
In partnership with Tony Hawks Center and Bettlyn Moldovan Relief and Ursina Naef Hecke we have started therapy sessions (kinetic-therapy and speech therapy) for the disabled children from Gratiesti. Currently Steaua Calauza NGO is renovating its facilities to turn them into a Rehab Center for disabled children from Gratiesti. Until the renovations are complete, we are using spaces across our future center. With the help from Tony Hawks, Lynn and Ursina children benefited from such needed rehabilitation sessions for 4 months already.

Proiectul de renovare a centrului se realizează cu succes. Am beneficiat de mulți donatori si oameni cu inima mare/voluntari care in parteneriat cu noi au același scop: deschiderea Centrului pentru copii si tineret “NICUSOR” in Gratiesti. Lucrările de renovare a încăperilor viitorului centru continua. Puteti vedea in poze parcursul lucrărilor. Ferestrele noi instalate deja, podeaua si pereții in viitorul salon de terapie instalate. Podeaua in coridor si viitorul bloc sanitar reparate si teracota instalată. Mai este mult de lucru dar avem cu noi o companie de profesioniști Prestigiu-Az, care s-au alăturat scopului nostru, si cu ajutorul echipei lor de ingineri copiii cu dizabilități din Gratiesti vor beneficia de un centru de reabilitare frumos si adecvat.
Christmas 2015-2016
On Dec 27, 2015, Steaua Calauza together with children with specials needs and their families celebrated Christmas. We sang songs to Santa, danced with him and got lots of presents. We would like to thank everybody who participated and donated their time and funds to make this party happen and turn it into a memorable event in our lives and most important in our children’s lives.

Noi am cântat cântece si am dansat cu Moș Craciun si am primit multe cadouri așteptate. Am dori sa multumim tuturor care au dedicat timp si fonduri necesare pentru aceasta sărbătoare, care a devenit un eveniment memorabil in viața noastra, si cel mai importat in viața copiiilor nostri.

Consiliere juridică
On October 27, a team from the Center for Legal Assistance for people with disabilities (CAJPD), visited Steaua Calauza Center from Gratiesti, to conduct a seminar and provide legal advice and services to the community. Some of challenges being faced by children with disabilities from Gratiesti refer to the evaluation and understanding of the disability and evaluation of the ability to employ disabled people, adaptation of the school processes for the disabled children, disputes regarding the facility for the rehabilitation center renovation.
Steaua Calauza NGO adopted the independent network monitoring mechanism (FORMER), a tool for the monitoring of the implementation of UN Convention of the rights of people with disabilities. This status will enable them to submit recommendations to the Government of the Republic of Moldova, via alternative report of the civil society (DECIDE). The report will prepared by the participating organizations of the civil society for protection and promotion rights of persons with disabilities.

La 27 octombrie, o echipă a Centrului de Asistenţă Juridică pentru Persoane cu Dizabilităţi (CAJPD), au vizitat AO Steaua Călăuză din Grătieşti, în scopul oferirii serviciilor de consiliere juridică în comunitate. Câteva dintre provocările cu care se confruntă copiii cu dizabilităţi din Grătieşti se referă la determinarea dizabilităţii şi a capacităţii de muncă, adaptarea rezonabilă în procesul de evaluare şcolară, litigiu în privinţa dreptului la locaţiune pentru a fi renovat.
AO Steaua Călăuză a aderat la reţeaua Mecanismului Independent de Monitorizare, un instrument de monitorizare a implementării prevederilor Convenţiei ONU privind Drepturile Persoanelor cu Dizabilităţi. Acest statut îi va permite să prezinte recomandări Guvernului Republicii Moldova, prin intermediul Raportului Alternativ al Societăţii Civile. Raportul este elaborat, de o manieră participativă, de către organizaţii ale societăţii civile din domeniul apărării şi promovării drepturilor persoanelor cu dizabilităţi.
Handmade si vizita la bilblioteca din sat
Un sfarsit de saptamana ploios, dar petrecut impreuna cu copii si familiile cu activitati interesante, lucru manual si vizita la centrul de calculatoare in incinta Bibliotecii din Gratiesti.
Therapy through art
In aceasta zi frumoasa de duminica, 18 Octombrie, Steaua Calauza a organizat o sesiune de terapie prin arta si lucrul manual.
Copiii si parintii au creat împreuna lucruri minunate si unice pentru decorațiuni. Ajutați de voluntarii nostri devotati, am confectionat manual adevarate opere de arta care pot fi folosite ca decorațiuni de Craciun si alte ocazii. Aceste sesiuni fac parte din programul: Stimularea prin arta si lucrul manual. Aceasta este o metodă de intervenţie recuperatorie care presupune realizarea unor lucrări manual, socializare, stimularea creativității, creșterea autonomiei/independentei personale, dezvoltarea unor deprinderi.
On this beautiful day , Sunday, October 18, Steaua Calauza organized a Therapy through art and handmade work.
Children and parents created together nice paper and other materials unique decorations. Helped by our devoted volunteers, we made true art pieces that can be used as decorations for Christmas and other occasions. These sessions are part of the program: Stimulation through art and work by hand. This is an intervention method, which involves carrying out work manually, socialization, creativity stimulation, increase personal autonomy/independence, skills/ abilities development.

The next step is: Complete renovation of the room currently used as a warehouse to be converted into a new handicapped rated bathroom. The work shall include:
•New ceramic tiles sloped towards a new floor drain. Floor at the entrance door shall be at the same elevation as the floor in the hallway.
•Ceramic tiles on the wall, from the floor to be new ceiling.
•Ceiling: green type gypsum board rated for humid atmospheres.
•Wall mounted sink
•European standard toilet
•Stainless steel bars for people with limited mobility
•New electric hot water heater (25 liters)
•Automatic hand drier
•All needed accessories such as toilet paper holder, hangers, door stops, etc.

Bathroom Facility For Disabled Children In Moldova
Summary
Steaua Calauza NGO for Children with Disabilities aims to support the disabled children and families throughout the Gratiesti town, Republic of Moldova and to facilitate access to therapy, recovery and treatment methods appropriate for the disabled. The local administration gave Steaua Calauza a facility that does not provide adequate sanitation facility for disabled children. The objective is to provide Steaua Calauza an adequate, disabled accessible and safe bathroom with flush toilets.
What is the issue, problem, or challenge?
Disabled children in Moldova are kept home, isolated with limited access to healthcare, medication and other needed therapies. They become insecure, develop secondary disabilities, lose their independence, which further worsens the possibility of integration. Our facility does not have inside bathrooms and disabled children have to go (or being carried) outside to an outhouse, 150 meters away. It discourages parents from bringing children to our center and in turn, they keep them home.
How will this project solve this problem?
All donations will serve to build a bathroom in our facility. Disabled children will benefit from a sanitation facility with ramps, wider doors, extra room inside stalls for a wheelchair and special seats. They will enjoy a safer and healthier environment when they come to the center and enjoy a bathroom that is accessible, private, secure. Additionally, more parents will be encouraged to bring their children to participate in our activities enabling better development for them.
Potential Long Term Impact
An improved facility will have a huge impact of the morale, health and development of disabled children from Gratiesti. This renovation will create favorable conditions for the disabled children and their families where they will have access to much needed therapy, efficient recovery and treatment methods appropriate for the disabled, training, counseling, advocating. Children will also receive socio-medical support and assistance, training and education.
Fundraising event at Rodrigo
On May 4th, 2014, Rodrigo restaurant hosted a charity event – “Steaua Calauza – Paella at Rodrigo”.
The main goal is to raise funds for the disabled children “Steaua Calauza” in Gratiesti, Moldova. Many people were part of this noble cause, enjoyed some delicious Spanish food at the Rodrigo Spanish restaurant. This event raised 13500 MDL = 1000 USD.
