U.S. Embassy visits Guiding Star Center

I’m writing to tell you about the children from the “Steaua Calauza” NGO for Children with Disabilities, where I am currently involved and in love with.

Through a community outreach project from the US Embassy in Moldova, we visited the children from “Steaua Calauza” in Gratiesti town. This nongovernmental organization was created by a mother named Viorica who had a child, Nicu, who was born with Spina Bifida. After many attempts to get assistance from the government for Nicu’s therapy or his education, she was very disappointed when she could not get any. This is the reality for Nicu and many other children in Gratiesti and in the country in general. Many children with disabilities grow up in isolation, at home and alone, without hope for improvement due to lack of family resources or government assistance.

Disillusioned but willing to make the best for her son, Viorica, together with some other parents with children of similar conditions, interested in getting their children out of their current isolation, began getting together in her living room on a regular basis. While the children would play, the parents shared their experiences gaining skills and tips on how to help their children and their families to deal with their situation. The children’s motor and social skills improved tremendously and the parents were getting a lot from their experience sharing sessions.

The group grew to a point where Viorica’s living room could not house such a large group. As a result, the parents appealed to the local administration who gave them a dilapidated, rotten infested room in a government owned building. Through their own efforts, they raised enough money to make this usable.  But still the room was neither safe nor meeting sanitation standards.

During one of our visits in the winter, we met a volunteer English teacher who gives free English classes to the children. This is how Nicu, Viorica’s disabled child could learn English. Unfortunately, unable to raise funds for Nicu’s surgery, he died in April of 2013. Nicu became the inspiration of the entire community of Gratiesti.

In 2013, my family, Natalia Modval’s family and the Steaua Calauza NGO fixed the windows, floor, ceiling and the walls. The all hope to turn the available spaces into a more efficient facility (to include sanitation facility), capable of providing therapy and counseling for the children, the parents and the community.

Vreau să vă povestesc despre copiii de la Asociatia pentru copii cu dizabilitati “Steaua Calauza”, cu care sunt implicat în prezent.

Printr-un proiect a comunității de la Ambasada SUA în Republica Moldova, am vizitat copiii din “Steaua Calauza” în orașul Grătiești. Această organizație neguvernamentală a fost creată de către o mamă pe nume Viorica care a avut un copil, Nicu, care sa născut cu Spina Bifida. După mai multe încercări de a obține asistență din partea guvernului pentru terapia lui Nicu sau educația sa, ea a fost foarte dezamăgită că nu a reușit obține nimic. Aceasta este realitatea pentru Nicu si mulți alși copii din Grătiești și din țară în general. Mulți copii cu dizabilități cresc izolat, la domiciliu și singuri, fără speranță de îmbunătățire din cauza lipsei de resurse sau asistență guvernamentală.

Deziluzionat dar dispusă să-l facă sănătos pe fiul ei, Viorica, împreună cu alți părinți cu copii cu dizabilități, cu scopul de a scoate în copiii lor din izolare, au organizat intâlniri în casa lui Nicu. În timp ce copiii socializau, părinții au împărtășit experiențele lor și sfaturi cu privire la modul de a ajuta copiii lor si a familiilor în aceeași situație. Abilitățile motorii și sociale a copiilor s-au îmbunătățit enorm și părinții benefician enorm din această experiență.

Grupul a crescut și casa lui Nicu era prea mică pentru un grup așa mare. Ca urmare, părinții au apelat la administrația locală, care le-a dat o cameră dărăpănată, putredă într-o clădire publică. Prin eforturi proprii, aceștea au strâns destui bani pentru a repara spațiul oferit. Dar totuși această cameră nu corespunde standardelor necesare precum și sanitare.

În timpul uneia dintre vizitele noastre în timpul iernii, ne-am întâlnit cu o voluntară profesor de limba engleză, care oferea cursuri gratuite de limbă engleză pentru copii. Acesta este modul în care Nicu, copil cu handicap al Vioricai a reușit să învețe limba engleză. Din păcate, neavând fonduri pentru operația necesară lui Nicu,  el a murit în aprilie 2013. Nicu a devenit inspirația întregii comunități din Grătiești.

În 2013, familia mea, familia Nataliei Modval și Parintilor Asociației Steaua Calauza am reparat ​​ferestrele, podeaua, tavanul și pereții. Sperăm să transformăm spațiile disponibile într-un edificiu eficient și utilizabil (inclusiv grup sanitar), pentru a asigura terapie și consiliere pentru copiii, părinții și comunitatea.

Portable Soft Ball Poll

Children from the “Steaua Calauza” NGO for Disabled Children had fun with Santa, sang songs, danced and of course, got lots of presents.
